We have two plans for authentic replica Saxon Spinning Wheels. Both are very fine spinners which can be used to spin either wool or flax. Making this project is very satisfying for the woodworker as the final outcome is a fully functional spinning wheel. An authentic bit of early americana, this project is also a fine decorator piece. Almost any kind of wood can be used, though antique spinning wheels have been found made mostly of pine, maple, walnut, and other woods native to the area in which they were used.
Some necessary parts require threads to be cut in wood, metal cutting, filing and brazing, and the plan shows how to make these parts by displaying them in full size. There are no longer pre-made hardware kits available through WoodcraftPlans.com, so fashioning those pieces or buying them elsewhere will be up to you.
** At this webpage you are purchasing the LARGE spinning wheel plan, the wheel of which is 30" in diameter, the unit standing 45" tall. We also have a Small Spinning Wheel.
This is a blueprint style plan which is heralded by beginners and experts alike as being a pleasure to work from because all parts are printed in full size -- all joinery is shown in actual size, curved workpieces are all in full size, therefore you can measure and trace straight from the drawing if necessary. A bill of materials doubles as an exact cutting list, there is a detailed exploded diagram, and all hardware requirements are provided. The exploded diagram so detailed that project specific assembly instructions are not provided. A special booklet entitled Guide to Building Wood Furniture is included with each Furniture Designs, Inc. plan and includes many tips explaining the "component theory" of woodworking.
